抗战胜利后，由山东老区组建的四连护送工作队开赴南满塔河地区，建立新的民主政权。刚刚提升的指导员林玉生（朱亚文 饰）带队行进中突遭敌人伏击，我方损失惨重，女队员秋英（甘婷婷 饰）在战斗中失踪，久寻无果判定已牺牲。真实情况是秋英脱险后也在寻找林玉生，结果是每每都失之交臂。后来相逢后，俩人沿袭了先前那和争强好胜的别扭关系。辽沈战役前夕，由于主力战略转移，四连军心不稳，陆续发生了军纪问题，感情问题，以及上下级矛盾等诸多问题，但林玉生逢山开路、遇水搭桥，逐步化解了困忧部队的种种困难，他要向秋英证明，自已现在已是个合格的指导员……。Baby Annie is HIV positive and has been left in the hospital by her drug addicted mother.
